Emma & Jake {Mini Military Session} Hampton, VA

I originally started doing free military sessions through Operation Love but decided to decline the membership and to just continue to offer the free sessions.
After doing my very first session with the Hutchinson Family while their father was deployed, I decided that holding free mini sessions for members of our military families in the area was the perfect way for me to give back for all that they do for us.
Meagan lives in Norfolk, where her husband is currently serving in the Navy. Meagan drove up to Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton for her session. When she arrived, she had a wide smile and was very personable. On top of having her daughter with her, she also had Jake, their friend's son. Jake's mother is deployed and his father had duty, so Meagan was watching Jake for the day.
We started taking photos of Miss Emma. Let me tell you, Emma is full of personality. I had never met such a little person with such a big personality. She had these stunning blue eyes and gorgeous blonde hair. The day of the session was also her big one year birthday! Happy Birthday Emma!

Emma wasn't really sure about sitting in the leaves.

Cutie!

These two shots are hilarious! In the middle of getting a shot with Mom, Emma decided to pick her nose. Immediately after, her finger went right in her mouth. We both laughed and joked that it was going to be displayed on her wedding day! Emma also didn't like the texture of the grass and once she started to crawl, she definitely didn't want anything to do with the grass. See, she has personality!

I also decided that since Jake was also here, we might as well get a few shots for his family as well. Jake was such a sweat heart! He let me hold him while we walked to different locations and was so loving! He also didn't want to sit still for long so getting a few shots of him were quite challenging!

Meagan joked about how these two are already destined to be married when they grow up. We sat them down next to each other in an attempt to get a cute snapshot. It started out nice and then they each touched each others hair, they shared an attempted kiss, then we had this little moment where they just looked at each other. Immediately after, a fight broke out and we knew they were done. It was so cute!

2012 Goals and My Bucket List

Well, this blog has been quite a long time in the making. I know this is more of a personal post but sometimes, those are fun to read too :)

I always kept saying "Oh! I should add that to my bucket list" when something interesting would cross my mind. Life would get busy and the making of my bucket list would get pushed to the side year after year. In the last few weeks of 2011, I was determined to actually get my goals (NOT resolutions) and to put my Bucket List in writing.

(In case you don't know what a Bucket List is, it's a list of things you would like to accomplish before you die)

So first, I will start with

2012 Goals:

-Ditch diet soda all together (still working on this one)

-Have more patience with my kids

-Do more "kid things" with my kids, even if it just means sitting in their room and coloring

-Buy one really awesome black dress to celebrate our 12 year wedding anniversary

-Go on a date with my husband at least 1 time a month

-Hit my goal weight by my September half marathon (9.2.12)

-Run that same marathon in under 2 hours and 30 minutes

-Appreciat everything I have more (husband,kids,friends, etc)

Those goals don't seem too unattainable. Besides, now that they are all over the internet, I kind of have to stick to them. :)

Bucket List:

1. Visit Hawaii for a week

2. ~~Have one of my photographs hang in a gallery~~ (CHECK: Nov 11)

3. Learn fluent Italian

4. Buy a house

5. Finish making books of my kids lives to present them on their wedding day

6. Donate $1,000 anonymously to a charity at one time

7. Skydive

8. Get a tatto in Vegas

9. Visit all 50 states with my Husband

10. Hike the entire Appalachian Trail

11. Document a cancer patients life for one year in photos

12. Visit an orphanage in another country and bring a toy for each child

13. Help build a school or water station in Africa

14. Visit as many Holocaust locations in Europe as possible. Leave a flower in each location.

15. Successfully open my own boudoir studio

16. Meet Ira Glass

17. Successfully keep track and record our family history that my Great Aunt Alma tracked down over the years

18. Spend one year as a Vegan.

19. Win the lottery (in any amount over $100)

20. Spend one week as a family living completely "unplugged"

21. Travel to NYC soley to take photos

22. Visit St. Judes hospital and take photos for as many families as I can

23. Live long enough to see a cure to cancer

24. Pay for each of my girls entire college degrees in full

25. Visit CIA headquarters in Langley

26. Write an apology letter to anyone I've hurt (with no return address)

27. Help someone find a lost relative

28. Eat pizza in Naples

29. Be completely debt free

30. Finish a full marathon (23.2 miles)

31. Eat only homegrown veggies for one year

32. Give awesome home made gifts for Birthdays and Christmas for one year

33. Take my husband to a Super Bowl game

34. Buy a newer car and pay in full with cash

35. Successfully complete a triathalon

36. Write my own song

37. Don't go out to eat for one consecutive year. Only home made meals.

38. Re-do my entire wedding day

39. Volunteer at a nursing home for one year with my kids

40. Visit an active volcano

41. Witness a tornado (my biggest fear)

42. Go on a cruise with my mom, sister and best friend, Rehanon

43. Pay for my husband & I funerals so my kids and family won't have to

44. Document (in photos) a live birth through first year for a mother

45. Learn how to paint

46. Learn how to knit/crochet and create a blanket for each child to pass down to their children

47. Successfully reach my goal weight and then never diet again

48. Read the Bible from cover to cover

49. Stay at an ashram in India for at least 30 days

I'm leaving #50 up for suggestion. What would you suggest??

Sarah & Brian {Wedding} Hampton, VA

I first met Sarah while I was at Dolce Vita Salon for Emily & Chase's Wedding Day in November. Sarah did a spectacular job on Emily's hair and makeup for her wedding. Before I left, Sarah informed me that she was getting marring on December 19th. As I was handing her my information, she told me it wouldn't me like the typical wedding that I was used to. I have to be honest, I didn't quite know what to expect.
Through emails and a few phone calls, I learned more about her wedding day and I was SO excited! This wedding would not only be my last for the 2012 season, but it would be so fun and enjoyable because it was just different and unique. It sounded like the perfect way to end such a great wedding season!
Sarah & Brian wanted some laid back, fun and personal shots of just the two of them prior to getting married.
This morning, we met in Yorktown at sunrise.
Did I forget to mention that it was only 34 degrees outside while we were taking these photos?? Yeah, it was super cold by Sarah & Brian barely showed it.
I love the theme they chose for their session and immediately knew after looking at the first frame that I would instantly fall in love with not only the two of them but also their photos.

It was soooo cold but I didn't care! I laid down on the frozen ground to get this shot. It was totally worth every minute!

Umm, hello!?! How cute are they?

The sunrise was the perfect backdrop for this session. It also helped to make the photos appear like they weren't taken in the middle of winter. :)

I love the old style they brought to the session with their choice of outfits. Way to go!

At this point, Sarah's feet started to hurt from the cold. She kept going and didn't let it phase her one bit!

I absolutely lovelovelovelove this shot! This needs to be on a canvas now!

I adore the loving and playful feel they wanted for the shoot. It was so nice to just sit back and watch moments happen in front of me. They seriously made my job soooo easy!

After about 30 minutes braving the weather, we decided to drive down the street for a change of scenery and for a chance to warm up. Sarah wanted some railroad tracks to go along with the vintage theme for the session. I think we found the perfect spot!

Look at how good looking these two are! They will have adorable kids!

Back near the field, there were some old buildings that we just had to use. I think they fit perfectly with the rest of their wedding story!

I love their tattoos! Every piece was just gorgeous!

For this black and white shot, we were playing off how antique photos were taken. Mission accomplished!

LOVE!

After our sunrise session, we headed to Catherine Warfel's house where the wedding ceremony was going to be held. Catherine is a non-denominational, inner- faith Ordained Minister. I arrived a few minutes prior to Sarah & Brian, so Catherine and I had a blast chatting about weddings. She was so down to earth and fun. I would highly recommend her if you are looking for a minister for your big day!
The ceremony for Sarah & Brian was short and sweet. The only guests were their mother's, which I thought was incredibly sweet! During that 10 minute ceremony, we all shared tears and laughter as we wished Sarah & Brian well on their new journey as Husband and Wife!

This was the moment where everyone had a little tear in their eye as these two promised to love and support each other for the rest of their lives. It was such a sweet, romantic and intimate ceremony and I was so honored to be a part of it!

After THE kiss, we took a few moments to get some shots of the newlyweds alone and then Sarah had Brian remove her garter.

I just want to express how FUN this day was for me. Despite the cold and having to get up early, I had the best time that I've had in a long time. It was so relaxing and enjoyable to shoot something out of the ordinary. I had free will to just do what I do best and I think it really shows.

Baby Bryson {Portraits} Newport News

I shot Julie & Patrick's wedding in November of 2008.

We have stayed in contact through facebook (My favorite!) even after their wedding. Julie contacted me and wanted to get a few shots of their new little guy, Bryson. We had a date set and when I arrived, Bryson just wasn't having the best of days. Hey, being 5 weeks old is hard work!
We rescheduled and he was in a much cheerier mood, just in time for some portraits for Julie & Patrick to use on their Christmas cards this year.

I think he might just be the cutest little guy ever!

These two shots were taken during our first session. These were the "in between" shots that I captured while Julie was trying to calm little Bryson down. I just loved how these two images really capture Motherhood.

Doesn't Julie look awesome for having a 5 week old baby? I'm completely jealous!

Being a model is tough stuff!

As babies grow, you discover all of these new things that they can do. When everyone tells you how quickly time passes when you have children, it totally does.

Thank you to Julie & Patrick for allowing me to photograph your little guy. I look forward to watching him grow!

Hutchinson Family {Portraits} Newport News, VA

Today I met Kayla and her two little ones, Max & Molly.
Kayla's husband is a soldier in the military who has been deployed for the last 10 months. The GREAT news is that he will be returning right before Christmas so she wanted to get a few portraits taken before he arrives home from over seas.
We met at Newport News Park for a quick 30 minute session and despite the cold weather, Max and Molly did an amazing job in front of the camera!
I hope these two little ones (and Mom too!) enjoy the time they will get to spend with Dad once he arrives back home in the States.

After the session was over, we headed over to the park so they kids could let loose and play for a bit. I couldn't help but snap a few shots of them having a blast.

Only a few more days and Daddy will be home!

Shoot for Good {Breast Cancer Awareness} Va Beach

On October 8, 2011, I took place in the Shoot for Good campaign. This amazing campaign gave local photographers 24 hours to take photos of something good (a person doing a good deed, a volunteer serving the homeless, feeding animals at your local pet shelter, etc). The point was the capture a good deed in motion.
After being sent the link to this awesome organization, I just knew I had to join in.

In the month of September, I posted an update on my Your Life Photography facebook page in search of at least two cancer survivors who were willing to share their story in honor of Cancer Awareness. In return for their time and story, they would receive a free portrait session.
This is how I met the AMAZING Amy. My next door neighbor (Amy's high school friend) put me in contact with her and she gladly agreed to the session and to openly share about her experiences with cancer.
We chatted through the entire portrait session and I learned more than I had ever before about cancer. I also learned how incredibly strong, brave and simply awesome Amy is.

After Amy's portrait session, I decided to upload two photos from the session to the Shoot for Good website.
After submitting my own photos, I decided to browse through the 2011 Gallery submissions and was just blown away! There were photos that just brought me to tears. One of my favorites was the father carrying his son with a Superman cape on his back. You look at that photo and you can't help but smile.

On October 25th, I received an email that let me know that one of my shots was chosen for the gallery!

Shoot for Good opened up a gallery at Studio Evolve in Virginia Beach and on November 4th, they hosted the Gallery opening! It was pretty much a big deal! SO many people showed up, including a local radio station, and plenty of people who helped contribute to the cause. It was GREAT to see so many people there to support such an amazing vision.
Here is my little contribution to the movement:

Amy met me there (along with my friends! THANK YOU!) and we even got to meet Stephen, one of the brilliant minds who created Shoot for Good. He was incredibly kind and Amy insisted we all get a photo together.

Shoot for Good even made it on the news. If you watch, you will even see a quick shot of Amy's portrait!

Emily {Bridal Portraits} Mariner's Museum, CNU

You might remember Emily from her engagement session or her most recent blog entry that chronicled her wedding story.
We met Emily and her mother at the archway of the Ferguson Center at CNU. The sun was out in full force so we had to find a nice location out of direct sunlight so we decided to take advantage of the lovely arches that grace the Ferguson Center.
When I first saw Emily's choice for her wedding dress, my jaw immediately dropped! It fit her like a glove and looked simply amazing. I must admit, I have fallen in love with one shoulder wedding dresses!

Doesn't she look just lovely!?

Every time we had someone stop and comment, Emily's mom would let them know "My daughter is getting marrrrrried!!"

Emily chose to order the photo on the right for her framed 16x20 canvas print, which was displayed at her reception. Great choice!

After spending some time at CNU, we headed over to the Mariner's Museum by the Noland Trail, where we found some lovely and warm fall colors. Perfect!

Yes! LOVE the fall colors! (My favorite time of year!)

This bridge was the perfect location for a nice fall bridal portrait. We dodged runners and dogs for this shot but it was so worth it!

Emily is just beyond stunning!

Emily + Chase {Hampton Wedding, Langley} 11.26.11

I'm not even sure where I am supposed to begin when it comes to describing Emily & Chase's wedding day. From the moment we met Emily at the salon, I knew the day was going to go amazing. She was in the best mood and everyone was so cheerful. Of course, she was getting MARRIED!

My second shooter Angel and I met Emily and her Bridesmaids at The Dolce Vita Salon in Yorktown. Let me just throw out a quick shout out real quick to Dolce Vita. You guys were a-m-a-z-i-n-g! They had everyone's hair and make up completed in record time and they left the salon looking like celebrities!

Emily's hair and makeup was crafted by the very talented Sarah! Check her out!

GORGEOUS!

After the salon, I headed to Emily's house. Her mom had lovingly prepared a short message wrapped in a bow with a pashmina wrap and lunch for the ladies once they had arrived.

This was also Emily's first glance at her lovely fall bouquets! LOVED them!

While everyone was eating, I headed upstairs to grab some detail shots of Emily's dress. I must say, I have fallen in love with one shoulder dresses!

Emily had a special garter made for Chase, which celebrated his recent graduation from Ranger school!

Her bouquet was just perfect!

Right before Emily hopped into her dress, we took a quick moment to snap a shot of mom and her two daughters. How cute are they!?

Hello!! Emily was smiling ear to ear as she awaited the bus that would take them to the chapel.

Angel headed to the Mariott at City Center to catch the men getting ready. Angel did an amazing job second shooting this wedding with me. I always have the best time when I have her by my side on wedding days!

While Emily was busy getting ready, Chase and his groomsmen were at the hotel making sure everything was just right on their jackets.

Chase & Emily's wedding ceremony took place at the Historic Langley Chapel on Langley Air Force Base. The church was so gorgeous inside!

I just love the looks the couples give each other for the first time they see each other after walking down the aisle. Chase kept peeking over the guests to get a glimpse of his Bride as she was walking down the aisle.

Once they met at the front of the church, it was all smiles and they immediately grabbed each others hands and didn't let go until the end of the mass. These two are SO in love!

I love love love this shot because Emily's father had a smile on his face as his daughter was listening to Chase pledge to spend the rest of his life with her.

The also had both families come up and lay hands on the newlyweds in prayer as they started their new journey together. What a great way to start your life together!

These two shared a romantic kiss in front of their guests and then it was down the aisle as husband and wife! WOOO!

Emily & Chase also had a Saber Arch that was performed by his military friends. Saber Arches are a wedding tradition where the newlyweds pass under an arch of sabers and this signifies a salute to the new couple!

Have you ever seen such a gorgeous wedding party? They all looked great!

When we were about to head into the church for some quick shots, Chase asked me to take one more shot for him. I had no idea what these guys were up to but this was the result! How about that? These guys LOVE to have fun!

Chase and Emily photograph sooo well. You may remember this from their Engagement Session back in July. Seriously, they make my job so easy!

And check out the gorgeous sunset on the base! LOVED IT!

We had a few minutes between the ceremony and the reception, so Emily wanted to head down the street a little to this bridge. I don't think I can use enough words to convey how much Emily loves bridges. It's serious business! We knew we had to steal a few seconds on the bridge when we saw it. The only down side was that the area was swarming with the biggest mosquitoes I have EVER seen in my life. The entire wedding party toughed it out while we took some quick shots. These two never let it phase them that they were surrounded by the little pests.

We then headed to the reception where the party got started. These two know how to throw a party and they know how to have fun! I had a blast capturing all the exciting moments that happened throughout the night.

This cake was the BEST! Oh my goodness, I want more!

The details at the reception were stunning! I fell in love with the center pieces. Let's just all take a moment to bask in the glory of Chase's grooms cake. Isn't this the best ever?? Hey, it's 5 o'clock somewhere!

Emily & Chase shared their first dance as husband and wife. Again, you can't help but notice how truly in love these two are!

See? Awww!

When it came time for Emily to dance with her dad, I just lost it. I always picture my two little girls dancing with their Daddy and can't help but cry. This dance they shared had so many emotional moments that I couldn't help but cry. (In a good way, I promise!)

And of course Chase shared a dance with his mom. They chose to dance to Lynard Skynard's "Simple Man", which I thought was totally awesome!

Chase was told by the DJ that if he retrieved the garter by only using his teeth that it was good luck. He gladly took on the challenge and he succeeded!

Then they had heartfelt toasts shared by family and friends. I especially loved Hillary's (Emily's youngest sister) toast.

Oh yes! They totally smashed cake in each others faces!

I think they were all happy to see each other! What do you think?

Awesome, awesome reception!

I love these two shots because Chase and his family seemed super close. It was so nice to see them dance together and then share a long hug afterwards. This is what family is about!

As the night wound down to an end, Emily & Chase shared one last dance before the night ended. This dance was extremely special to these two because early in the morning, Chase was leaving to head over seas. In three weeks, Emily will join him as they spend at least the next four years living over seas. I simply can't imagine leaving the day after my wedding to head to another country alone. This is only one small example of how much members of our military give up so that we can enjoy our freedom.

This photo brings me to tears (seriously!) every time I look at it. I picture whats going through Chase's mind knowing that he is saying good bye in the morning to his friends and family and heading to another country. Emily is holding the man she will spend the rest of her life with but she must wait three weeks before she sees him again. This photo is easily one of my favorite shots ever.
The two of you are just so amazing and wonderful. Emily, you are one of the strongest women I've ever met.

Emily & Chase were wished well and received a sparkler exit by their guests.

Congratulations to the two of you! I know that when you are reunited in three weeks, you guys will have a blast learning a new culture and exploring new countries together.

Cornish Family {Portraits} Norfolk, VA

Crystal contacted me after her co-worker Amy, had her cancer awareness portrait session. Crystal loved the photos and called me immediately. She was so full of energy and very excited over the phone. Like so many other families, she doesn't have a current family portrait session hanging in her house and she wanted to change that!
We met at the Pagoda Garden in Norfolk. This location has been a favorite ever since I shot Amanda & Justin's wedding in 2009. When I first met the Cornish family in person, I immediately knew we were going to have so much fun! The parents were easy going and the kids were in good spirits! What more could I ask for?

Skylor & Sebastion are seriously the most photogenic kids I have ever had in front of my camera. (Yes, this includes my own!) They were such naturals!

While the kids enjoyed looking at the koi fish, we had a quiet moment with Mom & Dad.

We then headed to Oceanview Beach in Norfolk. I let each child take a moment to take control for a little bit. They each had to opportunity to pose Mom & Dad and then I would take the shot. This lovely pose is all Skylor's creation! Awesome, right?

I am so happy that I had the chance to meet the Cornish Family and I look forward to working with them many more times! You guys rock!

Rachel + Steve {Wedding} Historic Mankin Mansion

Rachel & Steven tied the knot this past Saturday at the Historic Mankin Mansion in Richmond, VA. They really couldn't have chosen a better day to get married. The sun was warm, bright and there was a perfect breeze to keep everyone cool. Welcome to fall!
Melissa Arlena asked me to second shoot Rachel & Steven's wedding with her. I have to admit, I secretly love second shooting! It gives me a chance to step back and see weddings from another perspective, as well as to take the time to get those creative shots that I love to capture. I want to send out a big "Thank You!" to Melissa for inviting me along for the day! I had a blast with everyone at such a gorgeous location!

Historic Mankin Mansion is such a lovely venue for your wedding day! The staff is great and the location is loaded with lovely spots for great photos!

Rachel was surrounded by her bridal party and mother as she stepped into her wedding gown. These were the final moments before she walked down the aisle to greet her soon to be husband!

Rachel chose a gorgeous royal blue for her wedding colors and paid close attention to the details that would make her wedding day just perfect! I love it!

These are just a few of the details of the ceremony location. Rachel had fresh orchids attached to lanterns that adorned the aisle and paper flowers strewn through the iron gazebo where they would say "I Do!"

As a second photographer, it's my job to make sure that all of the family members make their way to get their photos taken in a timely manner and to assist the main photographer in anything he or she may need. This can sometimes be hard as I have to step back from my normal role of having everyone look at me for direction. It forces me to see things from a different point of view. During formals of the family members, the youngest members of the wedding party were having a rough time. These two cuties were just a little unhappy and I couldn't resist capturing this moment. The Bride and Groom really wanted a photo with the little ones but they just weren't happy. We all decided to go for it anyways. This shot is my point of view as the photo was being taken. They are both so precious!

While Melissa was taking photos of Rachel, I pulled Steve aside for some photos. Let me tell you, Steve knows how to pose! Every other second he was striking a different pose! I love it when the Grooms really get into the photos.

Rachel had an amazing bouquet of fresh orchids! How lovely!

MARRIED!

As a second photographer, it's also my job to not draw attention to myself during the photo session with the Bride & Groom. I only took photos when they were looking at each other or away from Melissa. It was a neat experience to not only see how another photographer works but to also witness the moments of the Bride and Groom in love instead of trying to document every single moment.

This was taken at a moment when Melissa asked them to look at each other. This is such a different perspective than what I'm used to but I think it worked perfectly.

We were so lucky that we had so many great locations for photos as we hit that "golden hour" of light before the sun set.

Remember the bench from the photo above? Well, that bench has a very important meaning for their wedding day. Steve decided to carve "Will you marry me?" into the bottom of the bench and then use it to propose to Rachel. They decided it would be perfect to have on their wedding day to bring the story full circle. How amazing is Steve for being so creative with his proposal? What a keeper!

Steve carried Rachel into the reception and they enjoyed their first dance together as husband and wife.

The wedding cake featured more fresh orchids and also had different layers of flavors, which included pumpkin spice. Yes, pumpkin spice cake. Mmmm!

Rachel & Steve were toasted by friends and family, included Steve's best man. They have literally known each other since they were infants. I just love seeing life long friends give speeches at weddings.

When you have a DJ AND a live band, it's pretty much guaranteed that everyone is going to have a blast! Mission accomplished!

The new couple enjoyed a romantic moment under the magical string lights before the night ended.

Rachel & Steve were wished well by guests and ran through a row of sparklers on the way to the car to start their new journey in life together.

Congratulations to Rachel & Steve on your wedding and I hope you are having a blast on your honeymoon in Bora Bora!

Christine & Irv {Wedding} American Rover - Norfolk, VA

I have to admit that when Chris originally contacted me, I tried to find her another photographer that would better suit her needs. I sent her an email filled with other local photographers information and I thought that was that. Less than a day later she emailed me back and said she had to have me as her wedding photographer.
I agreed to have a consultation and immediately after sitting down, I knew I would love their wedding.
Christine & Irv aren't your "typical" Bride and Groom. They are a little older than most couples I shoot, they're only wedding party member was their dog, she would carry no bouquet and there would be no dancing or DJ. To me, all of this sounded fascinating because their wedding day was so unique and personal.
Their wedding day finally came and we couldn't have asked for better weather! Chris, Irv, their dog and about 14 guests boarded the American Rover for a four hour sail, where they would exchange their vows.

What more could you ask for on the day you are about to start your life together?

Chris prepared herself below deck and anxiously awaited the moment she would see Irv and their guests.

Chris waited below deck with her mom (who flew in from France!) and a co-worker. She was so happy!

The crew of the American Rover untied the ropes, prepared the sails and we were on our way for a gorgeous four hour cruise through the Hampton Roads Harbor. It was wonderful!

They exchanged vows with a soft breeze blowing and the warm sun shining down. Wonderful!

Sir Keegan, their labradoodle, served as ring bearer. I have to be fair and admit that Keegan stole the show during the ceremony. Who can say no to that adorable face?

I absolutely loved how much fun they had. Even their ceremony was full of laughter and smiles.

We took a few moments to capture the newlyweds before they joined their guests below deck. Taking formals on a boat that was actually sailing was a new experience for me. I had to brace myself as I snapped away but it was SO worth it.

This is love.

After the photos were taken, they had greeted their guests and nibbled on some delicious food, they enjoyed the sun on the stern. It was quiet and perfect.

Christine was so excited to be married that she had to announce it to every boat that passed. We did get a tug boat or two to use their air horns. As the sail was coming to an end, they sat at the bow of the ship and enjoyed some laughter and sunlight together.What a perfect ending to such a great day!

As the boat pulled into the harbor, the newlyweds had a spontaneous mini dance together. I was told Irv wasn't much of a dancer but I knew when I saw this moment happen, I just had to get it. How sweet!

BIG congrats to Chris & Irv! Thank you for being persistent and also allowing me to be such a big part of your day. Your wedding was perfect!

Wella {Boudoir} Hampton, VA

Wella had contacted me after viewing Janelle's Boudoir session that took place in Washington, D.C. Wella also attended Aubrey & Nelson's wedding in 2010!
She was getting married in a month and wanted to surprise her soon to be husband with a gift that he would not forget or see coming. In August, we met at The Magnolia House in Hampton for her session. This place was amaaaaazing! The lighting was awesome, the decor fit perfectly with her theme and after chatting for a bit about wedding details, we started her session.
Wella was an awesome model. She needed very little direction and brought along the perfect outfits for her session. She even brought some personal items, like the VMI sweater as well as her fiance's high school football jacket, to really bring out the personality in the shots she was going to present him with.
Her session seemed to fly by as we laughed, listened to Ella Fitzgerald and chatted the night away.
I was absolutely excited to post these photos but I had to wait until she was married.
Wella & Justin tied the knot this past weekend in a beautiful and emotional ceremony so I can now share these lovely photos! Thanks for giving me permission to share!

We went with an old school feel for most of her photos as it seemed to fit the style and look for her session. Oh la la!

Meet Amy {Cancer Awareness Portrait} Norfolk, VA

Last month I posted on Your Life Photography's facebook page that I was giving away two free portrait sessions to raise awareness for breast cancer. This year I wanted to do something a little different & more creative to raise awareness. I wanted to share stories of what it's like to be diagnosed with cancer, fight cancer and live in remission. I wanted to share tips on how women can get checked out in a way that would be remembered long after you walk away from your computer.
My next door neighbor Barbara put me in contact with Amy. They went to high school together and Amy has been fighting breast cancer. Amy is currently in remission but is still closely watched by her doctors.
Amy & I met at Oceanview beach and as we chatted, we took some relaxed portraits. Amy was extremely excited as she is the one who has always been the one behind the camera. She has documented every step of her journey of cancer and plans on making a book of her story. As she shared her story and thoughts, I held back my tears and listened.
As I post these photos, the words underneath will be Amy's story in her own words.
As you read this post, listen with an open heart and make the promise to get checked regularly. Remind every woman you know how important it is for early detection!

"I was a 44 year old married mom who woke up one Saturday morning with my left breast swollen up three times the normal size. I ended up going to the urgent care & was told it could be a infection or cancer. The Doctor wanted me to see a breast doctor that week. He called me that Monday and had set up an appointment for a mammogram that Tuesday, as well as a doctors appointment Wednesday. Well on Tuesday I went & had the mammogram done they asked me to sit & give them a chance to review it. A few minutes later they came back said I needed to have a ultrasound on my left breast. They stressed to me to see the doctor the next day. I pretty much knew then that I had Breast Cancer. The next day the doctor told me same thing that the Urgent Care doctor had said but wanted to give me a few more days on the medicines that I had been given. When I went back in, I was still swollen so he did a biopsy. (so painful!l) When it came back they told me I have Breast Cancer and we started the testing."

"How did I feel? I was scared, upset and worried for my family. I called my husband and told him that we needed to talk when he got home from work. He of course didn't want to wait so I had to tell him. There was silence and then he said "I love you!" A month later I met with my chemotherapy doctor who said I had stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer. This meant that we had to start chemo right away with no waiting."

"So in the shower that night I came up with a saying for myself to help me get through this: "I can do it, I will do it, I am doing it, I have done it!!" I knew it would be hard but I was not going to let this beat me. I was going be more positive then I ever have before! I am not saying that I didn't have hard times but if I gave in, I would not have survivied it. That was not an option. I felt that I had to survive this to take care of my family."

"I started chemo from March 2010 to July 2010. On Friday Aug 13th 2010 ( yes Friday the 13th,) I had my double mastectomy done. They also took out lymph nodes, which still had cancer. I am not NED (No Evidence Deteceted) so I had spacers put in to keep the skin streched out for when I have my replacements done. From October to December I had raditation.
March 25th 2011, I had my reconstruction done so I have my new boobs. I had my nipples put on in September and still need to have my tattoos finished up.
I am considered in remission and will be seeing all my doctors every few months so that they can keep an eye on me. I am triple negitive so I can not take the normal cancer pill to help keep it away. This means that I must have the most postive attitude."

"Now you may ask how did I handle work? Just like I had a cold get up and go to work. I did what I had to. I still had to take care of my family and pay the bills. Now I'm not saying I didn't have time off or I wasnt out from time to time because I was. I was not going to (again) let it stop me from living my life as best I can. "

"Okay, I know that was a lot but those are the basics of the cancer. There is so much more to the story as far as having my family's support and my friends. My Husband and son were the greatest at watching over me. My husband went to all my chemo appointments. My son watched over me when I was really sick and in bed. My dad was always there to do whatever we all needed. My family sent me cards and support. My friends sent me so much! Support is another thing I guess you need to help you help yourself."

"What do I think people can do to help? Know your body! Pay attention to any changes. If there are changes, go to the doctor.Get it checked and don't wait. See your doctor regularly and don't let anyone tell you not to worry. You know what is right or wrong with your body so please get it checked out! Thanks so much for being a great supporter to the cause and letting others know how important it is to find a cure.... "

Now you know Amy's story. She was brave enough to tell me details of surgeries and the intense feelings that you go through during this time period. The photo of above of Amy walking in the sand is definitely one of my top favorites from the entire session. To me, it represents how far she has journeyed in her battle with cancer.

I have honestly never met someone so upbeat, full of energy and love. Amy is one of a kind and I am truly blessed to have met her.

Brittany & Tim {Engagement Session} Newport News, VA

Brittany & Tim are in the middle of planning their wedding that will take place in Lynchburg, VA in 2012.
They both live in Georgia right now while Tim is serving in the Air Force. They contacted me to let me know that they would be in town for the weekend and that they would love to get some engagement photos taken.
The both chose the Lion's Bridge that has the lovely backdrop of grass, trees and a beach.
We chatted for a little bit before we started to shoot and I instantly knew this session would be different from the rest. They were shy but full of laughter. These two are definitely made for each other!

We started with some relaxed portraits on the lawn by the Bridge. They quickly relaxed and let the laughter and smiles loose. :)

Feel the love...

Brittany let me know that she was a big fan of black and white portraits. I loved this photo in color but when I transformed the original shot into black and white, it took on more of a romantic feel. This might just be my favorite shot of the entire session.

These two are so happy. The seriously made my job so easy!

We walked across the street and took a few shots in the tree. These two climbed up the tree like it was nothing. After I got some shots on the ground, I made my way up the tree as well for some quick, romantic shots.

We then headed to a little beach that is set in the woods off Riverside Drive. Brittany had seen photos from a previous engagement session and loved the photo of the couple standing on the edge, surrounded by water. To capture these shots, I walked waist deep into the ocean. I could care less about getting dirty, wet or sandy during sessions. If I end up with a great shot in the end, it was all worth it! :)

Love, love, LOVE the reflection in the water. See? Totally worth it!

Near the end of the session, Tim and Brittany informed me that they had matching shirts and wanted a few hilarious shots. In case you don't know, "BAZINGA!" is a saying that Sheldon's character uses on The Big Bang Theory. These two are HUGE fans!

Shoofly Pie!

As soon as I opened my mail this morning, I knew I had to blog about it.
It's funny because I'm not naturally great at blogging. Words don't just flow easily for me and I don't have weekly entries of what's hot in the wedding industry. I simply blog about the gorgeous weddings that I am lucky enough to be part of.

This entry is a little bit different.

Last Sunday, Corey and I traveled up to York, Pennsylvania for Ashleigh & Ben's Wedding. We had such an amazing time while we were there. We were treated like family and truly had a blast throughout their entire wedding day.

We had a five hour trip back home but I didn't care. I was SO excited to get home and start looking at the photos we had just taken. The next day, I had previews up on facebook. Within three days, I had edited their wedding. I was just so excited to look at all of the lovely photos and let me tell you, Ashleigh loves to laugh. I had so many shots with her big, bright smile. You could obviously tell that Ben was so in love with his new Bride.

By Friday, I had the blog post up. I was so anxious to post it and hear comments from people who had attended the wedding. I have to admit, I always love hearing from guests at weddings. Weddings go by so quickly for me and there is just so much going on that it's fun to sit back and see how other people viewed it. Corey and I's ultimate goal is to remain the background during the entire day and after the newlyweds receive their photos, they are left with an amazing and full documentation of their special day. We just hope that our passion for what we do shines through in not only our conduct during the wedding day but also the finished product.

Linda, Ashleigh's gorgeous and incredibly kind mother, messaged me on facebook and asked if she could have our address. She wanted to send something our way. We then started messaging back and forth and today, the package came in the mail.

Let me just tell you, this package was a little slice of heaven!

I had no idea what was going to be in the box when it arrived. I originally though the package contained my Vibram Five Finger running shoes that I had ordered. When I opened it, this gift was WAY better! :)
While the girls were getting ready, Linda and I had a conversation about Amish cooking and Shoofly Pie. I had no idea what Shoofly Pie could possibly be. She described this delicious dessert full of wonderfulness. My mouth was instantly watering!

Fast forward today when I received this amazing box in the mail. I tore it open and was immediately filled with the smell of Shoofly Pie! Immediately, my mind went back to our conversation at the Salon and I was left with a smile on my face. This was such a thoughtful gift!

I wanted to dig in but I knew I had to take photos first. I had to document this pie because it looked THAT good!

Look at that! MMmmm!

How did Shoofly pies get their name? The sweet ingredients used to attract flies when the pies were cooling. The cooks had to "shoo" the flies away, hence the name. :)

Just looking at these photos makes me want to grab another slice!

Ashleigh & Ben { Wedding } York, PA

One of my good friends pointed Ashleigh & Ben in our direction. They wanted to use us as their wedding photographers but were a little worried about the distance that we would have to travel for their wedding day. They decided to drive down to Richmond for their engagement session. We immediately knew we would bond with these two and that their wedding was going to be A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I have to be honest, I was secretly hoping they would pick us because I knew we would rock it!
Fast forward to last weekend, we traveled up to York, Pennsylvania on Saturday and stayed the night. We hit some traffic on the way but overall, it was fun getting to drive through three major cities on the way to their wedding location. On Sunday, Corey and I headed to Salon Nouveau to get photos of the bridal party getting ready. I absolutely cannot rave about this salon enough. The staff was amazing and I have never seen such amazing hair styles! (and yes, they did survive the whole night!)

I loved the natural, yet unique look the makeup artist gave each bridal party member.

And Ashleigh purchased this lovely hair piece off of Etsy (Weddings). Etsy is awesome for handmade touches for your wedding day!

There was even some Zumba dancing while they were getting ready! How awesome is that?

We then headed to York Country Club, where the ladies dressed and awaited for the ceremony to start. What a beautiful location for a wedding!

Don't you agree? I am totally jealous!

While the ladies were busy getting ready, Corey was hanging out with the men while they prepared for the day.

Ashleigh and Ben opted for a First Look. This is basically where they see each other prior to the ceremony. I highly recommend First Looks as it not only gives the couple a private moment to enjoy before the ceremony but it also helps take away from of the nervousness as the Bride walks down the aisle. It also leaves room for an awesome photo opportunity!

We also took some relaxed portraits of Ashleigh & Ben ( as well as the entire wedding party) prior to the ceremony. I loved having such a flexible schedule to get these shots done.

Her flowers were nothing short of stunning!

You can't even tell that it felt like 100 degrees outside! They totally worked it!

Then we headed around to the outside balcony where the ceremony was due to start.
Each guest added a thumb print and signature to their "guestbook". This is such a creative and personal way to remember your wedding day. Even the couple's cats had a special spot :)

We then headed inside where the reception was being held. Guests were surrounded with beautiful flowers and had gifts of chocolate kisses awaiting them on the table.

And this next image totally makes me cry every time I see it. The moment that Ashleigh and her father started their dance, she was in tears. I was trying my best to hold mine back. Nothing compares to love between Daddy & his little girl.

This reception was full of so much energy and no shortage of dancing! I loved every second of it! Did I forget to mention that they served Thanksgiving for dinner? They totally did! That meal was by far the BEST food I have ever consumed at a wedding. What a great idea!

HUGE Thank You to Ashleigh, Ben & everyone who was there. We were treated like family, complete with our own seats at a table. You guys truly made our day easy and I feel like we have made life long friends.
Simply put : You guys ROCK!

Marlo & Adam Primmer {Wedding} Norfolk, VA

I originally met with Adam & Marlo during our initial consultation with Marlo's parents. They described their wedding details and shared the culture & traditions that were going to take place during the Jewish ceremony. I always love when I get the opportunity to capture Jewish weddings. I absolutely love the signing of the Ketubah and of course the Hora Dance during the reception. I always jump at the chance to learn new things about different cultures.
We met with Marlo at the hotel in the morning as the Bride & Bridesmaids had their hair by Sheri Conley & makeup by Joan Smalley. Both artists did an amazing job and I would highly recommend them!

I absolutely loved Marlo's veil! So classic!

After all of the women were ready, we headed over to Ohef Sholom Temple in Norfolk where Marlo was going to get into her wedding dress before the Ketubah signing & ceremony.

Before the Ketubah signing, Marlo & Adam set aside time to get some relaxed portraits outside. Marlo was SUCH a trooper, even through the heat!

We then headed into the Rabbi's Library for the Ketubah signing ceremony.

Afterwards, we headed to the ceremony for all of the guests under the Chuppah (huppa), which was built and decorated by Marlo's father! He did a fantastic job!

I always love when both parents get to walk their daughter down the aisle. This way, both parents get to enjoy the walk down the aisle as they pass their daughters hands over to the one she will spend the rest of her life with.

The rabbi also wrapped the couple in the tallit that Marlo's parents also used on their wedding day. Awww!

What a great looking wedding party!

Afterwards, they were greeted by guests outside of the Temple where an antique Rolls Royce Phantom V Limo awaited the couple, provided by Royal Coach.

We then headed to the Vista Point where the reception was to be held. While their guests enjoyed some lite food & drinks, we took Marlo & Adam outside for some great portraits as the sun was setting. PERFECT!

We then headed inside to get the party started!

One of my favorite moments is during the Father/Daughter dances. I always imagine my two little girls dancing with their dad on their wedding day and it always brings tears to my eyes.

Another favorite moment for me during Jewish weddings is the Hora Dance. LOVE IT! Adam's family is of Moroccan decent so the amazing DJ, Roger Cruz of Astro DJ's made sure to play some amazing music. I absolutely loved the energy in the room!

Thank you to Marlo & Adam for creating one memorable wedding and thanks for making us feel like family! Corey and I had a BLAST! We hope you are having a blast on your honeymoon!

Jacqueline & Bryan Hill {Wedding} Virginia Beach, VA

Jacqueline & Bryan both attend a faith based college in North Carolina so they had to plan their wedding while in another state. On Friday, we covered her rehearsal at Great Bridge United Methodist Church and on the way to the church, they were in a car accident. Even through all of the stress of getting married the next day and the accident, Jacqueline held it together beautifully! Their rehearsal was beautiful and was followed by a lovely intimate dinner with a slideshow of the couples life together.
On the day of the wedding, I met Jacqueline & the ladies at her parents house where they were getting ready. Corey documented the men while they were getting ready at a nearby hotel. Spirits were high as they had their hair and make up done.They all sang along to their favorite country music and chatted like old friends who haven't seen each other in a while.

I loved Jacqueline's choice of classic jewelry for her wedding day.

I LOVED Jacqueline's dress. She even had a custom hanger made with her soon to be last name :) I love those creative touches!

Jacqueline decided to have both parents escort her down the aisle. I LOVE this idea!

During the ceremony, Rachael sang a beautiful version of an Edwin McCain song. She has such a magnificent voice!

Jacqueline & Bryan were so expressive during the whole ceremony. Even when she had issues getting the ring on Bryan's finger, everyone laughed and let it roll on by.

FINALLY Mr. & Mrs. Hill!!!

We took some time to walk to the beach right outside of their reception location for some fun with the entire wedding party. This group was SO much fun! They were up for anything! I loved the stormy skies in the background.

After the formals with the entire wedding party, we took Jacqueline & Bryan aside for some romantic shots on the beach before the sun set. It was magical!

LOVE IT!!

The sun decided to peek out from behind the clouds for a few frames. I love the warm tones that the "golden hour" of sunlight provides. It's the perfect time to shoot portraits.

And of course we had to showcase the rings! I absolutely love the challenge of getting great ring shots.

We then headed to the reception area. Here is another idea that I loved: They featured photos of family members wedding photos next the guest book. They were also displayed along the windows in the church during the ceremony. I love how this incorporates past weddings of family members. What a great idea! (especially for family that cannot attend the wedding)

First Dances are always so much fun. They get a quiet moment to enjoy being married before the party starts.

This group wasn't afraid to dance! Every guest made their way to the dance floor as they celebrated the new couple.

This little guy was the lucky one to catch the garter. He passed it off to a groomsmen so he could have fun wishing the couple good luck.

I'm sure we all know this tradition. Whoever catch the flowers from the bouquet toss must sit and have the winner of the garter toss slide the garter up their leg. Apparently, the farther up the leg the garter goes, the more luck the newlywed couple will have. WOO!

At the end of the night, the DJ played "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra. All of the guests formed a huge circle as they sang with all of their might. At the conclusion of the song, everyone surrounded the Bride & Groom to wish them well on their new journey as a married couple. Awww!

We always try to take photos with the new Your Life Photography "family" members. Congratulations guys! We hope you enjoyed your beach honeymoon! Your wedding was AMAZING! Thank you!

Audrey & Branden - {Engagement Session} Newport News, VA

We first met Audrey & Branden during their initial consultation to discuss their 2012 wedding details. During the meeting, Branden had plenty of questions of how we work, the settings we use and had such an interest in photography. He even shared how he took thousands of photos during their trip to California. I absolutely love when clients ask us questions to try and learn more about what we do.

You may remember Emily & Chase's engagement session. Audrey & Emily work together as interns at NASA. Once Audrey had seen Emily's engagement photos, she was so excited for her session.
They planned to start the session near the Mariner's Museum and then heading to the Lion's Bridge and ending on the beach as the sun set. Audrey & Branden were so much fun! I had a very stressful day leading up to their session so I was in the wrong mindset. As soon as we starting shooting, my mood lifted as I watched them laugh, climb trees and dance in the forest. Words can't even express how much fun this session truly was.

Even though it was hot, they didn't let it show as we went to each location.

These two willingly got up in the tree to pose for some romantic shots. The lighting was a little harsh from the sun but these two were so patient for us to find the perfect spot for these photos.

As it started to cool down, we also took advantage of that warm, gentle sunlight.

For this shot, you have to understand that I was waist deep in water filled with jellyfish and fishermen all around me. It was totally worth it!

We let Audrey & Branden have a quiet moment while we stepped back to take photos quietly and they decided to have a spontaneous slow dance in the middle of the forest. How romantic!

We then headed back to the beach area as the sun started to set. This was such a magical moment. I loved seeing the sun descend into the water and capture these moments with two wonderful people who are so in love! (cliche but so true)

Janelle {Boudoir Portraits} Washington, D.C.

Janelle was a guest at two different weddings that I covered and when she contacted me through facebook inquiring about a boudoir, I was SO in. I absolutely love boudoir sessions. Not only does it give me a break from weddings but it also allows me to let my creativity loose and see what happens. It forces me to learn new shooting techniques with lighting, angles and new poses.
Push all of the technical mumbo jumbo aside, I get to help a woman truly love her body. If you are a woman yourself, you know how hard this is. It seems like in these days and times that you can never be skinny enough, tan enough or have the perfect look that in this time. I love going into shoots and know that they will leave feeling better about themselves. The females body is a beautiful thing that we should appreciate more often.
Are you going to look like a super model? Probably not but that doesn't matter. I often get lists of things that clients don't like about their bodies. It's okay, I expect it. I am also a woman and of course, I have specific parts of my body that I don't appreciate.(Who doesn't?) But when I put the camera up to my eye and start to shoot, it's my goal to not only give you the best possible photo for yourself or your loved one, but to transform your opinion of yourself. You ARE beautiful. Yes, you are beautiful just the way you are, flaws and all.
I go into each boudoir differently. I of course listen to what each client wants from each session, but I also go in with a new set of eyes to help create this version of you that you normally can't see.
I think every woman should have one of these sessions at one point in their lifetime. It's important to take time out of your hectic life of work, school, kids, family, etc to appreciate yourself and know you are beautiful!
I met Janelle in Washington, D.C. at the Donovan House right down the street from the White House. This hotel was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! The rooms had these cool, funky designs that made them look anything but a hotel room. I walked into her room and immediately knew this session was going to be amazing. We were 11 stories up with a wall of windows that overlooked Washington, D.C. How can you go wrong there?
I LOVED Janelle's session. We had so much fun laughing, joking and talking about the "bosses chair"! :)
Janelle's boyfriend was deploying to Afghanistan for one year a couple days after her shoot. I always love and appreciate my military clients. Thank you for all that you do for us!

Arron & Jesse {Portrait} Hampton Roads Photographer

I've known Arron for a few years and when he told me that his boyfriend was flying into town from Chicago, I told him we had to have a portrait session. We literally had less than 10 minutes for the entire session because the mosquitoes were just awful. Poor Jesse had so many bites on his legs that he had to deal with on the plane ride back home the next day.

Arron & Jesse make the perfect couple! At first they were a little shy in front of the lens but then again, who isn't? They quickly warmed up to me snapping away as they had their quiet moment together. Jesse was here for a week and they enjoyed trips to the beach and Busch Gardens but was leaving the day after our shoot.

I really hope you guys enjoy your photos and thank you for giving me the opportunity!

We started under the large tree but we quickly figured out that was where the nasty mosquitoes were the worst!

Kristen {Pin-up Portrait Session} Yorktown, VA

Oh! I have been SO SO SO excited to share the photos from this session!!
While shooting Kristen's Boudoir Session earlier this year, I mentioned to her that she would be perfect for pin-up. Luckily, Kristen is the type who loveslovesloves photos and jumped at the chance.
She started the day around 9am getting her hair & make up professionally done by the amazing Deanna Marie. When she arrived at the location and got out of the car, I just knew it was going to be an amazing session! She had the brightest red lips, curly era styled hair and orchid flowers off to the side. I instantly fell in love with her look!
We were lucky to have plenty of antique cars to use during our shoot provided by her coworker. Unfortunately, we only had time to shoot with the GTO but the shots were amazing! We look forward to heading back soon and shooting with all of the other awesome antique cars!

After we finished with the car and she changed into a new outfit, we headed to the Seaford Yacht Club, which is also where Kristen had her wedding reception!

We then headed to the front of venue for more shots, which provided the perfect backdrop for an outdoor, country feeling.

Emily & Chase - {Engagement Session}

We first met Emily, her sister and mother during our consultation at Starbucks in Yorktown. As soon as she started sharing the details of her upcoming November wedding, I knew I was going to love her! Emily seems so down to earth, honest and most of all, FUN! Her soon to be husband, Chase, is in the Army and we were waiting until he had a free weekend so we could head out for their engagement session.
Emily decided that Riverwalk Landing would be the perfect location. It was a little more packed than anticipated so we headed to the historic colonial houses before we headed back to Riverwalk, where we concluded the session at sunset.
I just have to warn you, I have A LOT of favorites from this session. I had a really hard time narrowing down the photos to a reasonable amount. Emily & Chase were SO fun that all of their photos were my favorite!

Hello, don't you just LOVE Emily's outfit!? In fact, it was one of the first things I commented on when I saw her walking towards me. I love the lace and cowboy boots!

I'm a sucker for a great black and white. Seriously, look at Emily's gaze. That's a woman in LOVE! :)

We also found this secret little patch of grass that was hidden from the outside world. What a lovely spot for the two of them to just cuddle.

As we were walking around, we found this quiet little spot between houses that had an awesome fence, gorgeous trees for the background and warm sunshine. These two are naturals when it comes to posing.

See that tree in the background of the last photo? Chase asked if he could take photos IN the tree? Who am I to say no to such an awesome idea? He helped Emily up and then we let them have their romantic moment sitting on the branch. Awwww!

Right as we were headed to the next area, my second shooter Angel pointed out this wonderful little country location with whitewash walls and gorgeous light!

Before we headed to the next location, I had to take advantage of the yummy light in the middle of the road. We had to keep dodging traffic but we made it!

About 15 minutes before the sun was about to set, we hit the beach and starting the romantic shots of the two of them. At this point, the sun was setting so we had to hurry and get that golden light before it disappeared.

They seriously look like models!

Of course we had to showcase the ring that Chase picked out for her. He's a keeper!

And I love love love love this shot. Hey, I REALLY love it!

And just because Emily & Chase are SO awesome, I have to share two "outtakes" from their shoot. Seriously, their session was full of so many giggles and jokes that I had a hard time composing myself because I was laughing myself! I love these two!

Kim & Jamal - {Engagement Session} Richmond Wedding & Portrait Photographer

I originally met Kim through Angela from Angela's Elegant Events. We shot Kim's Bridal session in Williamsburg on the campus of historic William & Mary. Check back for that blog next week!

On Sunday I finally had the chance to meet her husband Jamal and youngest child, Khloe. Kim and Jamal were married last year but decided to have the official ceremony and reception on their one year wedding anniversary, which is this Saturday! Jamal plays basketball in Europe and is currently aiming to join with the NBA. How cool is that? On the off season of his Eurpoean basketball season, Jamal & Kim come back to live in the states. We finally had a time set up so we could take photos of the two of them but the heat was almost unbearable! You have to love how Virginia weather is hot one day and rainy the next. The heat was ridiculous so their session only lasted about an hour but that was plenty of time for Corey and I to not only get to know our newest couple but to capture some timeless memories for them to take back home to France.

We attempted to start our session at Belle Isle in Richmond but that wasn't the best choice as it was the day before July 4th!

I always love the romantic feel of the Canal Walk in Richmond. Thankfully, this is one of the few places that was free of visitors for the holiday weekend!

Little Khloe was napping in her stroller peacefully when we first started our session. Once she woke up, she had no idea of what to think of Corey and I. We took a quick family portrait and waited for Khloe to wake up from her restful sleep.

30 Day Challenge - Day Two

1. 1930, 1940 & 1950's music. All you have to do is listen to any Fallout (the video game) soundtrack to see why I fell in love with these eras of music. I love the simple lyrics, the true talent that the artist have and how it can relax your mind when you hear about life back then. I miss honest and real music.

2. Family. I value the time I get with the four of us alone. Everyone tells you that your kids will grow up in the blink of an eye and you won't know where the time went. It is so true! Even though my daughters are only 6 & 7, it feels like time has passed so quickly for them and I want to treasure all of the time we have together. This also includes time with my family and my husbands family. Life is so short that I look forward to cookouts, hiking, time on the lake or just sitting and talking.

3. The Beach! I love just being able to sit with my toes in the sand and hearing the rush of the waves. It's so peaceful to me and it will never grow old. I grew up surrounded by mountains and vowed to one day move near the beach. Now, I can travel just 15-20 minutes and I'm a beach where I can just relax with a good book and let the kids make sand castles! I can't get enough of it, even though I rarely go in the water.

4. World of Warcraft. Yes, I am one of those geek girls who plays online role playing games. I didn't mean to get hooked on playing but once I played for the first 10 minutes, I was done for. I do take breaks from the game but always look forward to playing again. I recently even got my friend Angel hooked as well!

5. The Count of Monte Cristo. I love everything about it (except the sandwich). I adore the book & love the movie! (The 2002 version with Jim Caviezel & Guy Pierce). I'm not sure exactly what draws my attention to the story line but it still remains as one of my top favorite movies. Alias is my #1 favorite tv show of all time.

6. Diet Grapico. If you don't know what piece of heaven that I'm talking about, you should! I LOVE grape soda but I am just not a fan of regular soda made with sugar. It's never been one of my favorite things and this means never getting to drink grape soda. Well, my friends Will & Amanda have family who live in Alabama and were gracious enough to give me some. Apparently, Grapico is a southern tradition there and they were so unbelievably awesome enough to bring me FIVE boxes of diet Grapico. The name is pretty lame but seriously, it's happy in a can. Diet Cherry Coke Zero is #2.

7. Photography. This seems kinda of like a no brainer, right? Well of course I love wedding photography but I also love just being able to snap photos of whatever my eye sees. Only after I became a photographer did I start seeing in photos. I know that sounds weird but it's true. I will be on a walk with the kids and our dog and see something that would be awesome if it were a photo. This happens so often that I should just carry a camera everywhere. Thankfully, my iPhone has nifty little apps like Instagram and Hipstimatic that allow me the opportunity to snap away at the random things I come across.

8. People Watching. I love just sitting and watching people walk, talk and just be humans. I promise this isn't in the creeper sort of way. I just like see how different people react to different situations and how people relate to each other. Sitting on a bench and just watching or sitting on the beach and watching people walk by is oddly relaxing to me. Sometimes I will wonder what is going through their heads at that very moment or try to guess their life story. I'm pretty sure I'm wrong 96% of the time but it's still fun to guess.

9. My husband! Of course this is another no brainer. When you choose to spend the rest of your life with someone you look for someone who compliments your flaws, accepts you for everything you are and who connects well with you. Bryan is all of that and more to me. I'm often scatter brained and frustrated and he brings me back to reality. I often get things confused or don't know the meaning of specific words. I know I can run to him when I need help. When it comes to technical computer stuff - that's all him! He loves me no matter how mad I get. He loves me for my good and for my bad. It's an indescribable feeling to know that you have someone who will always be there to catch you when you fall, put a smile on your face when you feel like trash and just to be there when you want to talk, even about the stupid stuff. I love that man!

10. Tattoos. I know I will never be one of those people who is completely covered in artwork but I can find appreciation in those people who do dedicate their entire body to their vision. I think that having the ability to create permanent artwork on yourself is amazing. I know it's not for everyone and to some, it's still pretty taboo. My biggest piece is my half sleeve on my left arm that I got in celebration of turning 30! It took over 15 hours to complete & I get compliments daily. I understand that when I'm 80 that it won't look the same and that's ok with me. That means I had 50 awesome years to display my vision of art. I don't forsee getting many more. I don't have the pain tolerance that I once did and in this moment, I don't really have anything in my mind that I want forever.

10 Dislikes

1. I can't stand it when you pay for your bill at a restaraunt and the waiter decides to keep your remaining change without asking first. If I'm supposed to get $10.02 back and you give me $10.00,I'm not cool with that. I know it's not that big of a deal. It's just two pennies but if every waiter over your lifetime decided to do this, you are losing a lot of money. I just want the courtesy to choose what I do with my money, even if it is only $.02.

2. Liars. I really dislike liars. I don't understand why someone would choose to be dishonest in the first place. Once you start a lie, you have to create more just to keep the truth from coming out. Lying seems like a lot more work that just admitting the truth from the start. I don't understand why people would take the risk of hurting someone and choosing to tell a lie (or lies) instead. Lies never lead you down a good path so just stick true to yourself and be honest.

3. I can't stand when people stare at me. If I am in a conversation with someone, I don't like to be looked at. I don't mind short amounts but something about face to face contact makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't know where this stems from or why I have this seemingly irrational dislike but it's here to stay. Often when I hold conversations with people, I will look at objects in the room around me. The only exception to this is when I am in a consultation with a Bride and Groom or when I am shooting a wedding. During a consultation, it's required of me to be professional and show direct eye contact. Even during consultations I still have issues. I never know who to look at and usually give the Bride more eye contact than anyone else at the table. When I am shooting weddings, for some reason, it doesn't bother me as much. Maybe it's because I have a camera shoved in front of my face but it's my job to get people to look at me. I just make it happen.

4. I really don't deal well with silence. If I'm in a room and it gets super quiet, it makes me super uncomfortable. I don't know how to deal with the silence. When we have friends over and we are all in the middle of great conversation but then the silence hits between subjects, I kind of freak out inside. I really wish I knew a way around this.

5. Mushy food. I can't stand to eat soggy cereal and if my bread touches anything wet and gets a little soggy, I can't eat it. The feeling of the mush is just so disgusting to me. I also don't eat any toppings on my pizza, cheese included. Yes, I know I'm weird.

6. Cheaters. This goes for men and women. I feel like if you are cheating on your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/etc then you should have just been honest with them before you let it go that far. Yes, it might be more painful to admit that you no longer feel love for that person in this moment but it will definitely be better than admitting it after they catch you cheating. I think your significant other deserves the respect of knowing your true feelings and given the choice of what they would like to do. When you cheat, you have then taken their decision away and will ultimately hurt them way more than had you just been honest in the first place.

7. When my husband ruins songs for me. My husband has this uncanny ability to rhyme lyrics to my favorite songs. He will add funny lyrics of his own that fit perfectly into the song and then they get stuck in my head. From then on, when I hear that song, I can only hear his funny lyrics instead of the originals. This has happened to me so many times of the past 12 years that I just ask him to stop when I know he's about to come up with new and improved lyrics.

8. I really don't like numbers. This sounds incredibly stupid but it's true. I'm awful at math & calculating tips. Numbers just aren't my strong suit. I really wish it clicked with me like it does for others but I wasn't born with the ease of understanding math. I'm pretty sure that I barely finished Geometry in high school.

9. I dislike finishing a book that I have thoroughly enjoyed and then reading the ending only realize that it ruined the book for me. For instance, I enjoy reading Dan Brown's books (Digital Fortress, Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, etc) and I really enjoyed reading The Lost Symbol. Unfortunately, when finished the last page and shut the book, I was disapointed that I spent time reading that book. Along with this, you can add movie renditions of my favorite books.

10. Seafood. I really dislike seafood, including the smell. I can tolerate tuna and most fish but that's the extent of it. I really can't stand to be sitting at the table with someone who is eating lobster, shrimp, salmon, squid, etc. Sometimes just the smell of seafood can ruin the flavor of my food and I can't eat it. Again, add this to my weird quirks.

30 Day Challenge - Day One

You come across plenty of challenges in your daily life. We have seen plenty of these 30 day challenges: Get fit in 30 days, Lose 20 pounds in 30 days, or Get Organized in 30 days!
Well, I was reading a friends livejournal when she decided to start a different kind of 30 day challenge. She was kind enough to share the link with me & I've decided to also jump on this bandwagon. Most of them look interesting to me and if I get to one challenge that I'm not feeling, well, I'll just change it :) Of course these will be posted on Facebook as well as Live Journal, so I apologize in advance for people who read both.

Day One: Write some basic things about yourself.

This seems simple enough, right? Well, when I sat down to start writing out the "simple" things about me, I couldn't really come up with much. Life is complicated and rarely simple so that makes answering this question that much harder.
My name is Stacey (duh) and I'm 29 (for approximately 21 more days). I've been married for 11 years to my love, Bryan Salerno. Our story is an interesting one that most people can't believe. Bryan moved to Roanoke, VA (my hometown of cows and mountains) and in searching for new friends online, I was the ONLY hit through the site. This is completely odd because he left his search open and still, I was the only hit. We decided that after talking through email and the phone for maybe 1 day, to meet up. We met at Macado's (which used to be my favorite restaurant but is no longer on the list of faves). He had seen a photo of me but I went in completely blind. Did I mention that I was 18 and he was 23? I decided to bring along a group of my friends (saftey in numbers, right?) and all of them were younger than me. I met him and I won't say that we instantly clicked but I definitely liked him, a lot. Fast foward about 2 days and I just knew. He was it. Yes, at 18 years old, I knew he was the one I wanted for the rest of my life. I wouldn't recommend this path for everyone, but it certainly worked for me. Here comes the unbelievable part, are you ready? We were engaged after only two weeks of knowing each other and then married after just six months of dating. To most, this seems utterly crazy. To me, it was perfect. Of course it was stressful and being 18, everyone thought I was making a grave mistake. I was madly in love and no one was going to stop me. It's now 11 years of marriage later and we are happier than that first encounter at Macados. He is all I have ever wanted in another human being.

Okay, I also have two little girls who are 6 & 7 years old. Yes, we had our kids super close in age and no, it wasn't planned. I can't imagine actually planning to have kids that are only 15 months apart. You are lucky if the first is out of diapers and using a spoon before the next one is born. I won't lie, it was extremely stressful with the lack of sleep, feeding, rocking, crying, smiling, etc. Now they are older and easier to take care of (not to mention, they can entertain each other and have a built in best friend), I am SO glad that it worked out this way. When they graduate high school and are headed off to college, Bryan and I will be young enough to enjoy the time together traveling the world and exploring everything together. I have to admit, I am terrified of the "empty nest" syndrome but hey, we can handle it together. We do not plan to have any more kids as I think the two we have are a perfect fit for us. They are such cute little people who bring so many smiles, tears and laughter into our lives and I wouldn't have it any other way. I am SO incredibly thankful for those two little girls.

I live in the Hampton Roads area of VA but was born in a small town called Roanoke. I guess Roanoke isn't as small as it feels in my memories but back then, all I can remember were cows, streets with no speed limits, & mountains. I don't miss living in Roanoke but I do miss the mountains. It was fun to just leave for a day and hike for hours upon hours. I traded that all in for a view of the beach and a more populated area. Although the schools aren't nearly as nice as they are in Roanoke, I absolutely LOVE where I live! We are 15 minutes from Busch Gardens, 20 minutes from the beach, and we have so many fun things to choose from. Free summer concerts free kids activities and plenty of walking trails to satisfy my hunger for the mountain trails until I can head back home for a weekend.

I own my own wedding photography business. I never pictured myself as a wedding photographer and in fact, I never really thought about what I wanted to be. I definitely wasn't one of those people who was "born with a camera in their hand" or has it attached to their arm. That just wasn't me, yet. For a while, I contemplated with Forensic Pathology because yes, I am one of those weirdos that is fascinated with the stages of death. If I could help some family with an explanation of how their loved one passed, I was in! Unfortunately, I decided I didn't want to go to college and I couldn't really see myself getting a great nights sleep after coming home from a day of THAT kind of work. Instead, I endlessly watch Dr. Baden's HBO series. This was (and still is) enough for me to realize that Forensics really aren't for me.

Back to the point! Back in 2004-5, I decided that being a stay at home mom was AWESOME but I also needed to do something for me. I was going a little stir crazy and I needed to let my creative juices flow. I convinced my husband to buy me the Canon XT dslr camera (which was $1,000 at the time) without any solid reasoning. After I received the camera in the mail, I was hooked. I didn't start taking photos of people just yet. The photography world seemed so big to me and I knew nothing. When the lady on the phone from B&H told me that I would need a CF card to store my photos on, I argued with her. I was telling her that they stored in the camera. Little did I know, this isn't a point and shoot and things don't work the same. I had yet to learn the unique balance between iso, aperture, shutter speed, lighting, etc. It's sometimes hard to tell people that I didn't go to some huge college to learn about photography and that I taught myself. People tend to look down on this but to me, it's awesome! I learned the "hard" way and have my own perspective and appreciation for this field that I have grown to love. Annnnnyways, I keep getting off track. I started taking photos of the bushes outside. Then, I decided to take photos of butterflies because I have always loved butterflies and nature. I taugh myself the ins and outs of that camera and it wasn't easy! I learned what button did what, how to take this shot, what looks good and what doesn't. Then I had some photos of my dragonflies printed in the local newspaper along with a nice feature detailing all about dragon flies. I WAS STOKED! This was my official freak out moment when you realize that someone likes your work. Even though I was still very early on, someone loved my photos and thats all I needed to keep going. I kept working on my nature shots but during the winter months, that gets kind of hard. My friend Kristin asked me if I wanted to shoot a wedding with her in NC. We told the Bride that we had no experience and here we were, on our way to shooting a wedding. This moment sparked the creation of two healthy photography careers. Kristin and I worked together for 2 more years and then split off into our own unique brands of photography. We both remain wedding photographers but we have our different perspectives. I honestly don't know if I would have jumped into the world of wedding photography if it hadn't been for that initial invitation. Of course there were also times that I just wanted to quit. Starting into such a BIG field of weddings is so much for someone to handle. I mean you are documenting one of the most important days of someones life! I kept going and here I am today. I employ a second shooter, Corey, who I also taught. I don't pretend to know the techincal ins and outs of everything photography but I've had enough Brides, Grooms and Family members believe in me for over 6 years to keep me going. Nothing feels as great as knowing that you are trusted so much to capture every minute detail of such a HUGE deal. Of course they're stressful but they are also amazing. Think about it. I get to witness people pledge love for a lifetime every weekend. How cool is that? Yeah, its easy to say that I love what I do. I want to always continue to grow and never assume I know everything.
Ok, well I guess that wasn't so basic. Oops!
I look forward to posting the new challenge every day and feel free to harass me if I don't. :)

The Youngs - {FamilyPortrait} Hampton Roads Wedding & Portrait Photographer

Emily emailed me requesting a family portrait session for her family. After emailing back and forth, we finally had a day nailed down. She decided that shooting along the beach in Yorktown would be ideal and we would plan for a time after the kids had breakfast. Emily also let me know that these weren't going to be your typical family portraits, they were looking for something a little different. Emily and her husband are pursuing the adoption of a little girl in China and needed some updated, fun portraits of their family to show the adoption agency.
This was definitely a first for me but I was up for the challenge! Emily sent along some inspiration photos from a family members session in another state. The photos were full of love, laughter and huge kids grins! That's my kind of photo!
We met today along the beach and as soon as I saw them walking with their two little ones, Grace & Jonathan, I knew were were going to have some fun. I have to admit, shooting with a three and one year old can definitely be challenging but this family did GREAT! I even walked into the water up to my knees to get some shots of little Grace, who was just a little bit shy. It's okay Grace, you did a wonderful job!
I had to go into this session knowing it was going to be anything but typical. So enjoy looking at these photos of the Young family doing what they do best - being a FAMILY! :)

It took Jonathan & Grace a little bit to warm up but they came around!

This little guy will be walking on his own in no time!

Nothing can compare to the love a parent has for their children!

We attempted a quick moment in the sand but it ended up with Grace wanting to play in the water and little Jonathan eating sand. Hey, kids will be kids!

Grace finally got to stick her little toes in the warm summer water!
(the shot on the right was a result of me going in knee deep into the ocean with jelly fish! Totally worth every second!)

At the end the little ones were getting a little restless but we accomplished what we came here to do.

Today, I met some new friends and I look forward to learning more about adoption and seeing your journey in expanding your wonderful family!

Helen & Rick - Fearrington Village {North Carolina Wedding Photographer}

On May 20, 2011, Helen and Rick tied the knot at the lovely Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, NC. This was not only a special day for Rick & Helen but it was also my 11th wedding anniversay! What can I say, she picked the perfect wedding date! :)

As you read from Helen's Bridal session blog entry, she chose Fearrington Village for the lovely scenery. Helen & Rick grew up in England where outside garden weddings aren't allowed. She mentioned how she had always wished to be married outside in such a fairytale location since she was a young girl and finally, her childhood dream was coming true!

The majority of their guests all flew over from England to celebrate their big day with them. Helen, Rick and all of their family and friends made us feel like a part of the family during their wedding day. What can I say, I love these two!

The Fearrington Village has many different locations on the premises to choose from for your ceremony and reception location. Helen chose to use the gardens, surrounded by sweet smelling flowers and fresh air. The reception was held inside the Garden Terrace, which is both an inside and outside venue all in one! See, I told you this location was awesome!

How can you go wrong with views like these?

We met Helen at about 12, where she was getting her makeup and hair done. They also enjoyed hot English tea& pastries throughout the day.

Meanwhile, Rick was getting dressed and reviewing his vows.

After snacking, it was time to get dressed and prepare to walk down the aisle to meet her soon to be husband!

Awaiting Helen's arrival were these two handsome men, the Groom and Best man, along with Andy, the ring bearer.

Helen had her mother walk her down the aisle while Rick anxiously awaited her arrival.

Rick & Helen recited their vows in front of family and friends in the warm spring sun and slight breeze.

After the ceremony, there was a short cocktail hour where they met and greeted their guests. Of course, Fearrington Village provided amazing hors d'oeuvres. Yummy!

We then headed out for a few romantic shots of the newlyweds to truly capture the outside feel of their wedding day.

After the formal photos were completed, we headed to the Garden Terrace to start the reception and formal candle lit dinner.

This was my first traditional English wedding and when Helen told me they would sit and enjoy their dinner, they meant it. We all enjoyed a full course dinner and guests spent two hours enjoying the delicious food!

Helen & Rick had taken formal dancing lessons and it really paid off during their first dance as husband and wife. It was SO romantic!

After dancing and enjoying the night with their guests, Helen and Rick walked through a farewell of sparklers!

Helen's Bridal Session - Fearrington Villiage { North Carolina Wedding Photography}

Helen is so sweet! I knew from our first phone call that I would instantly love her! Rick and Helen spent the majority of their lives in England but were relocated to the United States by their jobs for a well known pharmaceutical company.

My second photographer Corey and I drove four hours to meet them at their lovely house in NC. We sat down and went over the sample albums and got to know them as a couple and even snuck in a few snuggles from the most loving dog that I've ever met. Their 12 year old dog Andy is seriously the cutest thing on earth and even served as the ring bearer in the wedding. We'll have a post for their wedding up soon. :)

Helen chose to have her Bridals taken at the location they chose for their wedding. When we arrived at Fearrington Village, I instantly fell in love. This venue is absolutely stunning and highly recommend to any North Carolina Brides!

We started by taking a tour of the premises and getting to know the different locations they were using for the ceremony and the reception. We sat with Helen as she was getting her hair & make up done and we chatted with her and one of her Bridesmaids and fellow co-workers.

The first location we chose was the room directly off from the garden. This room was so amazing and full of gorgeous light! It seemed that everywhere we went was plucked from a fairytale!

Over in England where Helen & Rick grew up, outside garden weddings aren't allowed. She was VERY excited to be able to get married in the fresh air surrounded by her close friends and family, all her flew over from England. You can just see her excitement of the upcoming wedding day in each smile she gave during the day!

We then headed out to the patures to wrap up our session. I have to give major credit to Corey for jumping an electric fence to snap the photo on right hand side. He kneeled down and the weeds that the cows used as food were as high as his head but he didn't let this phase him. He knew what shot he had in mind and he was determined to accomplish his goal. Way to go Corey! The risk was well worth the final outcome!

Helen was a gorgeous and generous Bride! I will be posting a blog entry on her magical wedding day this week so keep checking back!

A wounded Army veteran surprises his Wife with her dream wedding!

Last week, fellow VA photographer Laurie of Laurie Bracewell Photography posted on facebook in search of a second photographer for a super secret event. I jumped at the chance and was chosen! After emailing back and forth, I was let in on the details of what I had signed up for and it was AWESOME! I had volunteered to help surprise an injured veteran's wife with her dream wedding!

Sgt Recendez was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq in October 2006. While on a routine patrol, an IED struck the vehicle he was riding in, killing the driver instantly. Sgt. Recendez immediately suffered amputation of both legs but was thankfully airlifted to safety. He spent time in Germany and Walter Reed recovering and learning to use new prosthetic legs. His wife stayed by his side and helped him through recovery. Jude & Kristine both had plans for a nice wedding in CA but decided to move back to the east coast to help with Jude's recovery.

Adjusting to such a big life change was hard on them. Their apartment wasn't easily accessible to Jude while he was in his wheelchair. The amazing non-profit organization Homes for Our Troops offered a solution to their problems. They offered build a wheelchair accessible house for this deserving family. What a blessing! The very best part of this is that Homes for Troops does this at NO cost to the wounded veteran. They rely on donations and volunteers! You can read about Sgt. Recendez story on their website HERE.

Usually celebrities will attend the key ceremonies where the house keys are given to the families. Jude said he would rather give his wife the dream wedding they never had the chance to have back in CA. Of course, Homes for Our Troops and other vendors jumped at the chance to make this dream come true.

On the day of the key ceremony, Jude & Kris arrived in a limo that followed behind a motorcycle & police escort.

It was such an awesome feeling to see Jude & Kris get out of the limo with such huge smiles on their faces.
They hadn't seen their house in 7 weeks so it was a big shock to see it completed. All of the volunteers and donors each had their names on the lawn to show just how many people gave something towards this effort.

Jude even had a special rocking chair with the Army emblem. He sat in it and said he couldn't wait to enjoy his home and a cold glass of sweet tea.

There was a key ceremony in the driveway of their new home where Jude was awarded an American flag that was flown over the pentagon in his honor.

Many key speakers were present on this momentous day, including The Army's 14th sergeant major of Army, Sgt. Maj. Raymond F. Chandler III. After they were presented with keys to their brand new home, there was a short ribbon cutting ceremony. They were then lead through a tour of their new house while all of the media huddled in the master bedroom awaiting their entrance because Jude had arranged to have her wedding dress, shoes and special jewelry displayed in the master bedroom as part of his huge surprise!

As she opened the door, she was surprised by not only the media but by her wedding dress waiting for her. Jude proceeded to get down on one knee and propose to her all over again! Let the tears flow!
After saying yes (of course!!) she was whisked away to start on her hair and makeup while her front yard was turned into her wedding venue.

They were married for the second time, in front of the flag pole on their front lawn surrounded by family and friends who were in on the surprise all along. :)

Afterwards, they walked through a saber arch that was provided by The Old Guard, the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, official ceremonial unit and escort to the president and guards of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. It was kind of a big deal!

Jude & Kris then headed to their reception where they shared a first dance as "newlyweds" to a live version of Jack Johnson's "Better Together" sung by friends.

They enjoyed some delicious cheesecake, followed by a father-daughter dance and a toast to wrap up the event.

Jaclyn & Brian {Virginia Wedding Photographer}

It's rare that I would blog a wedding before engagement photos but thats just how it worked out this time around.
Corey and I met with Jaclyn & Brian and shot their engagement session in Richmond. We even got to tour Brian's work after hours to get some unique shots. I will be blogging about their engagement session next week, so keep a look out!
We met up with Jaclyn & the bridesmaids at the Kilmarnock Inn. I LOVED this Bed & Breakfast! They had their own garden full of fresh veggies, herbs and the grounds were covered with gorgeous blooming flowers!

After relaxing, all the ladies headed to the Sara Brown Salon to get hair & makeup done.

While the ladies were getting all dolled up, the men were hitting the greens for games of golf and frisbee golf!

After getting in some quality time with his groomsmen, Brian headed to prepare for the BIG day!

Jaclyn was back at the Inn anxiously looking forward to saying "I DO!"
Check out her lovely dress and stylish shoes! This is my kind of Bride! :)

And of course we can't forget about Lilly, their cute fur baby. Lilly had a the big role of ring bearer during the ceremony!

The ceremony was held at Brian's grandparents house in rural Lancaster, Va. I couldn't imagine a more storybook location for their wedding. They had a wonderful backdrop of water and the fresh breeze blowing as they said their vows. We re so lucky that the rain and thunder held off until near the end of the reception.

Jaclyn arrived on a horse & carriage. This was a complete surprise to Brian and all of the guests attending the wedding.

We took Jaclyn & Brian along the water for some romantic shots.

After the formal shots, we all headed to the tent to start off the reception! They had fresh flowers on each table and a live blue grass band to entertain their guests for the evening.

Of course Lilly had her own cake during the reception! Let me just tell you, I love this dog! She is SUCH a sweet heart!

Brian and Jaclyn wrapped up their night with a last dance and then ran through a farewell of sparklers held by guests. They hopped in their limo and rode away as newlyweds!

I hope you guys are having a BLAST on your honeymoon and I can't wait to see photos!

Erynn - {Bridal Portrait} Hampton Roads Wedding Photographer

Let me introduce you to Erynn.

Erynn is a very outgoing, fun loving ball of energy. Erynn and I met through mutual friends and have kept in contact since. Erynn is currently the Choral Director for Menchville Highschool and is about to move onto better things in sunny Florida! She conducts AMAZING show choir concerts that are simply AWESOME! (think Glee but even better!)

This California native is always full of positivity and love.

She contacted me a couple weeks prior to her wedding and asked if we could shoot her Bridals at the Crim Dell Bridge on the campus of William & Mary.

Let me tell you, William & Mary is GORGEOUS for any portrait session! We shot close to sunset to assure that the warm sunlight would accent her lovely red hair.

Erynn said "I DO!" to her husband Justin on April 2nd in a romantic ceremony.

I hope that as they go through the journey of life together that they never forget how magical their wedding day felt and that their love only grows stronger each day.

I loved that Erynn didn't chose your typical white dress. This color is AMAZING on her!

Kristen {Boudoir Photography}

Kristen's husband was one of the groomsmen in a top favorite wedding of mine in 2010, Agatha & Mike. She contacted me to set up a boudoir session so that she could create some unique, one-of a-kind gifts for her husband for Valentine's Day. I had no idea what to expect going in because I had only chatted with her through email. I brought along my album designer, April Roberts, so that I would have a second pair of eyes for ideas as I shot the session.
We showed up at 11am at her parents house in Seaford and were immediately greeted with a huge smile and an invitation to check the house out to get a feel for the different places we could shoot. The house was full of amazing, soft light--every photographers dream! There were also tons of antique pieces throughout the house which we gladly used for the photos.
As we started the session off, Kristen made everything seem so easy. From the first 10 frames taken, I knew this session was going to be a favorite of mine. She knew what she wanted and knew how to get it. I didn't have to direct her at all and only suggested when it was time to change outfits. It was an absolute blast to spend three hours with Kristen joking, laughing and just chatting. Overall, I had so much fun during her session and it was so easy to get great photos of Kristen. I see modeling in her future! :)

Red lingerie is perfect for a Valentine's Gift!

While walking through the house, I couldn't help but notice her wonderful wedding portrait and how lovely her wedding dress was. She mentioned that her Monique Lhuillier wedding dress was hanging in the closest and immediately, we knew we had to use it! The light, the couch, the dress, Kristen -- it was all perfect!

My name is Stacey and I'm a Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend and Photographer. I grew up in a small but ever expanding town called Roanoke, VA. After getting married to the love of my life on May 20, 2000 among flowers, family & friends, we moved to the Hampton Roads area. I've been married for almost 11 years and enjoying every single second of married life! In October of 2003, we welcomed our daughter Lilia to the world. Shortly after, Chloe was welcomed to our family on January 2005. At just fifteen months apart, they really keep life exciting and always give me a fresh outlook for each new day. Family & friends are some of the major influences in my photography. The idea of capturing a moment that may never happen again is what keeps me going and gets me thrilled about snapping each photo.

I often get asked if I had any formal training in photography or how I learned my skill. I don't have an elaborate story of how I attended years of college or how I've had a camera attached to my hand my whole life. I started as simply picking up my camera and starting to shoot. At first it was a way to get a break from life and just think. To put myself out there and simply create. I was drawn to nature shots and then made my way into portraits and weddings. I think being self taught has helped keep my eyes fresh and open to newer ideas & ways of shooting. I am always learning new techniques and always looking for opportunities to expand and grow as a photographer! My goal is to never stop learning everything I can soak up about anything photography related. I enjoy experimenting with new photo techniques and painting recycled vinyl records in my spare time.

I also volunteered for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Organization for two years. They offer bereavement services to those parents who have given birth to angels. They come to the hospital or to your house to take photos of your precious angel, which will serve as an heirloom moment. I was born in Groton Connecticut and moved to Hampton at a young age as part of a small family including a brother, a sister, a loving mother and a U.S. Navy submariner. I am a dedicated lifelong student of life and business, in pursuit of a degree in Business Management at Old Dominion University. I am a photographer for Your Life Photography and the manager of Jersey’s Cards, Comics and Games in Hampton, Va; part of a larger company with stores across Hampton Roads. When not working for either of my bosses or studying for my next exam, I enjoy reading and the company of excellent people I am fortunate enough to call my friends.

Photography is a hobby which quickly grew into a passion. I progressed from a want to create certain moments for the camera to a desire to capture one of a kind moments that come and go in the blink of an eye. A smile, a first dance, a kiss; these are the important things we remember about a day. Because you are a part of these events you cannot ever see them as the camera does. When captured on photograph, these awe inspiring spaces in time provide a rare opportunity to both remember something as a participant and observe it as an outsider with fresh new eyes and the ability to stop time.

My name is April Roberts, and I have been a wife for 11 wonderful and fulfilling years, and a mom for 13 amazing years. I am originally from a very small town in upstate NY and was raised by my dad and his wife in a house that never had a dull moment. There was always something interesting going on in my childhood home. I grew up the youngest in the house with two brothers who loved to be both my best friends and my worst enemies, depending on the day. I am blessed to have a great family, including a man whom I believe is my true soul mate. I was able to find at 19 years old something so precious that some search for their entire lives for…Happiness. My daughters aged 13, 10 and 5 both make me old and keep me young at the same time. They are the true loves of my life, and I am so thankful each day that I have been given the opportunity and responsibility of being their mom.

Throughout various times in my life I have been a student as well…always chasing knowledge and anticipating filling my life with things that will make me a better person. I completed a degree in a career field that I knew would allow us to have a very comfortable life financially, however it was also a career that I would be unhappy doing, so I threw caution to the wind and decided that I was going to go against the norm and not do something practical, but something that I love. I am so thrilled to be a part of the Your Life Photography team. The work that we do is both rewarding and fun. I love knowing that the albums that I design are going to be looked on by the bride, groom and family members with reverence and pride for many years to come. The thought that these photo albums are going to become family heirlooms and sources of information for such a big moment for generations is what drives me to put my heart into each one I create.

Helen & Rick {Engagement Portraits} North Carolina Wedding Photographer

Meet Helen & Rick. They are originally from England but their jobs moved them to the Raleigh, North Carolina area.
Helen has been so excited about planning her wedding here in the states as she has always dreamed of having a lovely, outside wedding. (which aren't allowed in England) They chose a lovely outside garden area to recite their vows and welcome their guests from overseas.
Their wedding date also happens to be the date that my husband and I said "I DO!" eleven years ago! Time sure does fly!
Corey and I drove down to North Carolina in the wee hours of the morning to hit the perfect, warm early morning sunlight by 9am. They took us to the local state park for some shots with their 13 year old dog Andy. Afterwards, we ended up at The North Carolina Museum of Art ,which was AMAZING!

April & Nick {Wedding Photography} Hampton Roads Wedding Photographer

Where do I even begin to start describing April and Nick? During our initial consultation, I just had a feeling that April and Nick's wedding was going to be gorgeous! April is a very detail oriented and outgoing person. She is one of the most personable people I have come across and I just knew that if any of that spilled over into her wedding, it would be a great day! Her wedding was also the last of the weddings for the 2010 year for me AND the day before her birthday. It had all the makings of an unforgettable day!

We started the day at Virginia Resort Hotel to snap some shots of the bridesmaids and the star, the Bride, getting ready. Immediately after stepping into the room, I was introduced to everyone and made to feel like a family member. We sat and chatted about everything under the sun. Time seemed to pass quickly as we watched April and her closest friends and family transform into a gorgeous bridal party.

I LOVE those shoes! So much spunk and personality!

And HELLO! Look at that hair and makeup! Ahhhhh-MAZING!

April and Nick also opted for a First Look. First Looks are when the Bride and Groom choose to see each other all dressed to the nines prior to getting married. First Looks really give the Bride and Groom time to enjoy a quiet moment together before the day passes so quickly. They get to focus on each other and contemplate on the fact that they are about to get MARRIED! :)

First Looks also take a bit of the nervousness away as the Bride walks down the aisle. I love this shot of April and her father!

They chose to have their ceremony outside on the top deck of the Lesner Inn overlooking the water. GORGEOUS and romantic!

I love the details that went into creating their reception environment. Lovely pinks, reds and some of the most amazing floral arrangements around!

April and Nick's first dance was just...lovely. I have to admit, I teared up a little bit during the dance.

The toast was started off by an emotional toast by April's father, which also left me in tears. I always picture my two little girls on their own wedding day and what it will be like to be in that same moment.

{Engagement Portraits} Hampton Roads Wedding Photographer

Ashleigh and Ben contacted me through email and asked if I was interested in shooting their wedding in Pennsylvania next year. Of course I would love to!
They made the drive from PA to VA to have their engagement session this weekend and to also spend some time with their close friends Sarah & Alex.
Ashleigh lived in Richmond, VA for two years so she chose lovely Maymont Park for the first location and then we headed down to Canal Walk.
This session was full of jokes, laugher and just great conversation! I had a blast getting to know them both and look forward to their wedding in PA next year!

And while getting those two shots above, I encountered this little (or BIG) guy:

I just HAD to take a photo to prove that I was actually near a spider and not screaming like a little girl.

After Maymont, we headed to Canal Walk in Richmond. I just love this location because it has such a romantic feel!

{Engagement Portraits} Hampton Roads Wedding Photographer

So even when the wedding season starts to slow down, business rarely slows down.
This past weekend I had two engagement sessions that I was absolutely excited about.

On Friday, I met Carmell & Bryant.
Carmell was referred to me by her cousin Jovie, who has been in bridesmaid in two of the weddings I've captured. Carmell flew in from San Diego, CA to have her engagement session and also got to spend the weekend with her fiance. Bryant was a trooper! We shot the engagement session on his actual birthday and they enjoyed a big, celebratory dinner afterwards! YUMMY!

I couldn't pick just two or three photos to feature on the blog of these two. Both of them belong inside the pages of any high profile fashion magazine out there! They really were so natural in front of the lens and their love really spilled through onto the photos.

Carmell asked for a country setting for the session and I wracked my brain trying to think of country locations in our urban area. I got inspired by another local photographer the night before the session and sent her an excited email of the new found locations. The sunlight was warm and gorgeous and the two of them were just naturals.

Kristen & Jake {Engagement Session: Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown Beach, VA}

Kristen & Jake contacted Your Life Photography via phone and wanted to set up an engagement session. They live four hours away in Lexington, VA but they decided on a change of scenery and headed our way for their engagement session. They chose Colonial Williamsburg, which is loaded with history. One hour before the sun was due to set, we headed to Yorktown Beach, which is also loaded with history and gorgeous scenery.

Corey and I had a blast getting to know our newest couple. They will be married this November in an LDS ceremony in VEGAS!

We walked around Colonial Williamsburg and enjoyed looking at period houses.

Kristen & Jake made a quick clothes change and we ventured to William & Mary's Barnes & Noble bookstore for some unique shots.

We also walked along Merchant's Square and took photos inside some of the little shops.

We then headed to Yorktown to catch that golden sunlight before the sun disappeared behind the clear skies.

I was born in Groton Connecticut and moved to Hampton at a young age as part of a small family including a brother, a sister, a loving mother and a U.S. Navy submariner. I know I am seriously behind on blog entries. I still have weddings photos from mid 2009 that need to be blogged! I've been using the down time from weddings to catch up on my wedding album designing and portrait sessions.
I've quickly fallen in love with newborn portraits. Sometimes these sessions can be rough because babies aren't always those little sleeping angels you see in photos. They are just born and the world revolves around what they need and want. Newborn portrait sessions take a lot of patience and quick finger on the shutter button.
I am thankful that I am chosen to capture the first moments at home between mom, dad and baby. It's such a surreal time that goes by so quickly.
Tracy & Jason were a Your Life Photography Bride & Groom from 2007. On February 9th, they welcomed baby Julien. Needless to say, he was an easy addition to their family and is loved by everyone already.

I look foward to capturing his life in photos as he quickly grows. :)

At the start of the session, little Julien was NOT happy. He wanted to be held and he was huuuuuuungry! After eating and some cuddle time with mommy, he fell fast asleep with a few moments where he opened his eyes. What a little cutie! I just wanted to snuggle him all day long!

Dad requested a photo of his hands and Julien's tiny little feet. I instantly fell in love with this shot!

Of course we had to have one with Mom too!

I was contacted to shoot a maternity session that was being filmed for a show that is going to be featured on MTV. It sounded like an awesome opportunity so I agreed. (of course!)
One the day of the shoot, I met the producer, camera men and sound guys. I was mic'd up and then started the session. It was such a unique experience for me.

This is Ezra.
He joins his family of three other siblings: Logan, Phoenix, Indigo and proud Mom & Dad.

He was alert the entire shoot and even peed on me once. You can already tell he is going to be a great little brother to his siblings.

See? He wanted to know what was going on the entire time! :)

He finally gave in and rested for just a few moments near the end. That didn't last though and he was back to checking out his new world.

We met years ago and even spent a year living together. I've been following the Black's family adventures from moving to CT to WA. They are just the type of people who are life long friends!

Baby Olivia

This is Baby Olivia.
I shot Tony & Jen's wedding back in July of last year. We became quick friends and through them, I learned the struggles of infertility.
They had failed in vitros, low follicles, MANY injections, etc.

They finally gave up because the financial and emotional burden was too much. They headed back to the beach where they got married for a weekend get away and that weekend, baby Olivia was conceived.

She was born on November 14 at 8 lbs 5 oz.

Taking photos is hard work!

This was my very first newborn shoot of a living baby. I often get called for NIMLDTS so I was trying not to compare each shoot to this one but I just couldnt help it. It was odd to be behind a camera and watch the child breath, move and cry. I'm used to stillness.

Congratulations Tony & Jen! You will be amazing parents!

We met at the historic Virginia State University, which was described on the campus website as "the first fully state supported, four-year institution of higher learning for Blacks in America."
It was lovely taking a stroll through such a historic campus and hearing the stories of how they met, where they shared their first kiss, etc.

So I know that it's been what seems like forever since my last blog post but I have been craaaaaaaaaaazy busy.
I am proud to say that I wrapped up the 2009 wedding year and finally finished editing the last wedding of the year. I am still editing engagements, maternity and waiting for some new little bundle of joys to arrive in the next few weeks. Even though wedding season slowed down, it doesn't mean I have. :)
Meet Debbie & Michael. We spent close to three hours talking & laughing during their engagement session this past Sunday. They told me they didn't know what to do in front of the camera but let me tell you, they did perfectly fine and needed no direction at all!
I absolutely cannot wait until their wedding next July!

We started the session at Town Center in Virginia Beach. I had never been here before but I instantly fell in love with it!

After Town Center, we headed over to Red Wing Park which was GOREGEOUS! (hello!!)

Our last stop was First Landing State Park. We took a stroll along the beach enjoyed the lovely weather.

Meet the Thibodeau family. Veronica is a local photographer and friend who asked if I would be willing to take their yearly family portraits. I of course jumped at the chance to take their photos and got to spend the day with a great friend. Afterwards, she took me out to dinner for my birthday.

I know it has been FOREVER since I have updated the blog.
I have a good reason though, I promise! My two little girls both started school for the FIRST time this year. Lilia, my five year old, started kindergarted this year! She went to school on her first day with no fears and was ready to go! Chloe, my four year old, started early elementary but went with a little bit of tears and a lot of hugs. We are two weeks into the school year and I am proud to announce that both girls are doing EXCELLENT in school and Chloe has even been chosen to represent her class at the Good Citizenship awards ceremony in two weeks!
I couldn't be happier!
Meet Tony & Jen. They were married last July in the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Jen & Tony had struggled with getting pregnant and decided to travel to the place where they were married to take a break and focus on each other. They decided to take a test and they were extremely pleased to learn they were pregnant with their first child!
Oliva is due in November so we took some photos to show to baby Olivia when she gets older.

I even told Jen & Tony during our photoshoot that they look more in love than on the day they said I do.

Rachael & Michael were married at the Omni Shoreham in the heart of Washington, DC in a traditional Jewish ceremony.

They were joined in a room by loved ones as they signed their ketubah.

After signing this marriage agreement, they were married by Jewish law and then it was off to the ceremony.

They were married under the traditional chuppah.

When it came time for portraits, these two were ready :)

Then it was off to the reception where they shared a romantic first dance as husband and wife.

Father/Daughter dances always make me tear up.

During the reception, the traditional Hora Dance was perfomed and the bride and groom were lifted up in chairs as people danced around them.

These two LOVE to have fun!

After the reception ended, we headed outside to take a few shots by the lit fountain.

I enjoyed learning more about the jewish culture and look foward to more traditional jewish weddings in the future!
